Headshots - Stéphanie
You may remember Stéphanie from the red Imperial Guard costume photo last week. She was a trooper standing outside St. Brigid's Centre for the Arts & Humanities during the recent Ottawa hot spell with her fiancé, Stephane and two other colleagues (Rob and Luc) in the 501st Star Wars Legion. Here are a selection of head shots taken for her.
The photos were taken with several lens choices (85mm, 105mm and 70-200mm) and all done in available light around the noon hour. In some shots I used a round Lastolite reflector (white & silver) to bounce the sunlight into the frame. She is a talented scrapbooker and her work is shown on her blog here: http://www.onthefunnysideoflife.blogspot.com

Lovely, especially the softness and colour tone of that first photo. Playful, fun, sort of dreamy. :)
Great to see the effect of the different lenses. Which do you prefer using/do you have a preference?
I hardly use the 105mm micro on adults as a portrait lens. It's much too sharp. I ususally use it for a macro lens (surprise surprise!) And I use it to photograph my kids. Because it's ridiculously sharp it brings out every detail that you have to soften and tone down in post (not much in this case). But it was fun to use and provided the right distance for some of the shooting that day. It was a conscious choice to bring it to the shoot as it's a heavy piece of glass, too. I wanted to try it out in a formal modelling situation. It worked out nicely.
But by far and away the 85mm f/1.4 is the bread & butter portrait lens. Honestly I don't know how one can take a bad portrait with it. I lurve it.
Thanks. I hear nothing but great things about 85mm. :)

OMG JOHN! Steph is one of my BFF's and although you had a gorgeous canvas to start with, I have never seen her look more beautiful than she does here! I have an standing saying with Steph, that she has a face that could launch a thousand ships .... I think you may have just bumped her up to a million ships! LOL
