Munificent
I read today that phototographer Don Denton has been written up in the Globe & Mail (BC ed.) It speaks of his son's stock photo on a recently published book and announces that Denton will be gonig to photograph the upcoming Winter Olympics. (Lucky duck!) The article ends with a word I don't hear too often.

Headshots - Stéphanie
You may remember Stéphanie from the red Imperial Guard costume photo last week. She was a trooper standing outside St. Brigid's Centre for the Arts & Humanities during the recent Ottawa hot spell with her fiancé, Stephane and two other colleagues (Rob and Luc) in the 501st Star Wars Legion. Here are a selection of head shots taken for her.
The photos were taken with several lens choices (85mm, 105mm and 70-200mm) and all done in available light around the noon hour. In some shots I used a round Lastolite reflector (white & silver) to bounce the sunlight into the frame. She is a talented scrapbooker and her work is shown on her blog here: http://www.onthefunnysideoflife.blogspot.com

"The Capital City Squad, a local chapter of the 501st Legion, has been in our region since 2007. The 501st Legion was initially founded in 1997 to simply provide a collective identity for costuming fans with a penchant for Star Wars villainy. Little did they know that it would turn into a worldwide non-profit organization that currently has more that 4500 members. It is currently celebrating its 12th year of service. The 501st is proud to put its resources to good use through fundraising, charity work, and volunteerism. The 501st is always looking for opportunities to brighten the lives of the less fortunate and to bring awareness to positive causes on both a local and global scale.
While we do not charge a fee for appearances (public or private), we enthusiastically welcome donations made to a charitable organization in the name of the 501st Legion. If you do not have a charity of choice, please ask the participating local 501st members for their favorite cause.
We will be around the Ottawa area as well as events from Kingston to Montreal."

Mike Blouin
When I heard every June on his birthday Mike gets a new tattoo I'd thought it would be a nice idea to photograph his new 'ink' (as the kids say these days.)
Mike has a new novel coming out (going through final edits now) which the house in the background figures prominently. More details to come when you read his forthcoming book!

Jim Bast - Association CroqCan 2009 Winner
Association Croquet Canada 2009 Championships were hosted by (AC) Croquet Ottawa at Elmdale Lawn Bowling Club in Ottawa, Ont. Fri 7 - Sun 9 August 2009.
Top ranked USA croquet player Jim Bast reads a newspaper as he waits for the award ceremony to commence. As I was setting up this shot he began to shew me away with the paper in joking manner. I say joking given the sport rarely gains public nor media attention. I also joked with him by saying I was shooting for Sports Illustrated....and no, I don't know what the ground sheets comment written on the chalkboard means.
Mine
A random pic from Canada Day in Greely, Ontario - July 1, 2009. Was going to post this earlier but waited. Then I saw this post yesterday on http://www.thelifeofm.com/2009/08/mine.html. So, I just had to post my version of "mine".

Nick Cave to come to Ottawa
from a recent email:
"We just got the news and we had to share - Nick Cave's confirmed to read at Saint Brigid's Centre on September 17th.
The lead singer of The Birthday Party, The Bad Seeds and Grinderman, Nick Cave has been performing music for more than 30 years. He has collaborated with Kylie Minogue, PJ Harvey and many others. As well as working with Warren Ellis on the soundtrack for the film of The Road by Cormac McCarthy and The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, he also wrote the screenplay for the film The Proposition. His debut novel And the Ass Saw the Angel was published in 1989.
His newest novel, The Death of Bunny Munro, "is not just a wonderful read, it's also a heartbreaking one. Cave writes novels like he does lyrics, with strokes of blood and sulphur and lightning. He strikes at the mind and heart and is able to bring his readers to their knees.’ - Neil Labute
Tickets will be on sale soon - keep an eye on www.writersfestival.org or our Facebook and Twitter feeds for updates!"
