Prorogued: For Your Safety
Launch of a poetry anthology inspired by the Prime Minister's prorogation of Parliament.
'Speakers, poetry readings, artists and performers came together in a lighthearted protest against the prorogation of Parliament.'
Edited by Stephen Brockwell and Stuart Ross
When Prime Minister Stephen Harper prorogued Parliament (for the second time in a year!) on December 30, 2009, he punted many vital bills into oblivion. But he also inspired hundreds of poems after Mansfield Press announced this government-toppling anthology. This book gathers a range of responses—from outrage to slapstick—by acclaimed poets (including Canada’s first Parliamentary Poet Laureate and several winners of the Governor General’s Award for Poetry), previously unpublished poets and, to paraphrase Stephen Harper, ordinary working Canadians.
Featuring poems by:

Back of My Head
No. It is not a social commentary. I have just been cutting my own hair for about 25 years now and it never struck me to see what the back of my head looks like, you know, what it *really* looks like. In detail. Permit me some self-indulgence will ya?
Not having visited a barber in this long time, I really don't know what the average cost for a men's hair cut is. But for ballpark figures, let's say it's $10 for this type of cut. So, I usually cut my hair once a month on average: that's $10 x 12 which equals $120 per year, and for a quarter century it would be...uh...carry the two...hmmm...$3000. It's nice to see that round figure savings realized in my pocket. Plus, there's the savings of getting to and from the barber, the time spent waiting for a barber, etc. etc. anyway, I always get repeat business from a very satisfied customer.
