I know less than half the characters but I'm getting something

--- (she-) lose (ze) select

(wo) I (zhi) count-pair (zi) character/word-(guo) country (wu) mistake (ke pa) terrible, ... ---- (wo) I (zhi) count-pair (zI) character writing (ying) wise one (wen) character/write ( )female (le) (grammatical)) action over

Pure speculation: along the lines of "your choice: lose my writings, lose my country, keep my writing keep it?

Sook-Yin Lee, host of CBC's DNTO, has a humorous segment on her radio show called "Lost in Translation". Was thinking of this when I posted my abovementioned hack of a phrase: "I only write Mandarin terrible. . . But I only write good English." I love how it translated that I write good English. Had a good grammar chuckle at that one. But it doesn't take me much to laugh.

A better place to learn Chinese for free, online anyhow: http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Chinese_%28Mandarin%29

I think what you meant to write was:

我的普通話不行,英語倒很讚.

普通話 is what Chinese would call Mandarin. 很讚 is basically the same as 很好, but is more colloquial.
