Unveiling of Statue of Oscar Peterson Followed by a Walkabout – Public Event
The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh arrive at the National Arts Centre – one of Canada’s foremost showcases for the performing arts – to honour Canadian jazz legend Oscar Peterson.

The Queen unveils a life-sized bronze statue of the late jazz pianist, crafted by Canadian sculptor Ruth Abernethy.

Oscar Peterson played for audiences around the globe, including The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh during the 2002 Golden Jubilee celebrations in Toronto.

A. F. Moritz has written more than 15 books of poetry. He has been a finalist for the Governor General’s Literary Award and he has won the Award in Literature of the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters and a Guggenheim Fellowship. His recent collection, Night Street Repairs, published by House of Anansi Press in 2005, won the ReLit Award and The Sentinel (House of Anansi, 2009) was given Poetry magazine’s Bess Hokin Prize. A. F. Moritz lives in Toronto and teaches at Victoria University. His most recent book of poetry, The Sentinel, won the 2009 Griffin Poetry Prize.

The Final 100 Meters - Peter

For some, the end of the marathon is a cruel, painful finish. Pride takes over and some would rather walk, or even crawl, over the finish line.

As I was photographing the Ottawa Marathon runners cross the finish line after a grueling 40K run, I noticed a man on his hands and knees about a hundred meters from the finish. He was struggling. He went down. He made several attempts to get to his feet but just could not muster enough energy to do so.

There was just enough power left in him to cross the first timing mat on his hands and knees. After this he was propped up by medical volunteers who were on hand to help. Here are three photos of Peter in the final 100 meters.

Ignoring the obvious fatigue the runner, on his hands and knees, struggles to get to his feet. He faulters during several attempts to rise opting to stay low to the ground to cross the first timing mat.


Resisting help initially the gentleman is assisted by a couple of aid workers to cross the finish line in the final meters of the race.


At the end of the line, the body gives out and Peter collapses from sheer exhaustion. The day is over this marathon runner.

For some, the end of the marathon is a cruel, painful finish. Pride takes over and some would rather walk, or even crawl, over the finish line. This man breaks down visibly after his exhausting journey.


The body is very resilient. This gentleman had an unblinking stare on his face crossing the line, then collapsed into the many arms of the volunteer medical race staff onto a waiting wheelchair.


The finishing line can be a chaotic place. There is a mix of people milling about: the race organizers, doping control chaperons, medical staff, the course volunteers, the media, and the athletes themselves. Most of the time it's very orderly and the runners make their way to the back to receive their well-deserved medals and a good drink of water and rest. It's always exciting.


The end of the race is where it counts. A few give it their all, and then some.
